Sam

was just after some advice on my nearly 3 year old possibly dropping her day sleep please?
Just wanting to know when you know it’s time? She fights day sleeps everyday and probably only does 2 day sleeps a week. I spend so much time trying to get her to sleep that we both end up agitated and upset. Only issue is come 3/4pm she’s hyperactive and overtired. I know there is a transition period but not sure if it’s her dropping her sleep or the fact we just moved house and states in the last 2 weeks, although she has been fighting day sleeps for awhile but not this stubbornly.

My son has just turned 2 and is not napping some days, I don’t ‘fight’ it anymore but do promote an hour of quiet time where I leave room darker and either read books, quiet play or watch a movie/TV or go we go for a walk in pram.. Bianca

Our son (just turned 3) still has a sleep most days- we leave it up to him though. So we read a story and then leave him to go to sleep, if he doesn’t sleep we ask him to stay in there for 45 ish minutes to just have some calm/quiet time. He’s a boy that does not stop moving from sun up to sun down- and he actually really loves his quiet time, reading, singing etc. We figure he’ll let us know when he’s ready. Lauren

My daughter will be turning 3 years old this Thursday. She stopped having daytime naps when she was 2 years 4 months old, because I find that when she naps she tends not to sleep during the night. What we have done to replace daytime naps/sleeps during the day (depending on the day) with a quite movie together or a little play out the backyard or let her have her own time with doing some drawings while I read a book. And because she no longer naps/sleeps during the day, it also means she goes to bed early, so early dinner as a family 5:30pm, than has daddy/daughter time with her father for an hour, has a bath and is in bed asleep by no later than 7:30pm. Macey

My 3yo gave them up about a month before his birthday. We do quiet time with a movie on while my 22mo and newborn nap. Emma

My son was the same seemed to so much need his day sleep but fought it and also started taking too long to go to sleep at night time that’s how I knew he no longer needed it. Although he gets tired at night he has become used to being awake all day and goes to sleep at night straight away. Alanna

Going through the same thing with my 3yo. I leave him to choose when he has a nap unless his eyes are red and he’s sooky then I put him to bed but he doesn’t usually fight it on those days. I also do dinner half hour earlier for everyone so start cooking at 4.30 it’s ready around 5pm and he’s in bed at 6pm when he hasn’t napped. Hope that helps but yes I do get the grumpiness around 3pm when he’s trying to put himself down for a nap which is where I take him outside and play bubbles or sit down and watch tv depending on what mood he’s in and wanting to do either way I have to give attention at that time and it seems to help Caro

I would drop it. Most kids want to drop it around 2-3yro. In place of a sleep, have quiet time after lunch. Sit down with a book or a movie. Make it part of the daily routine to have that quiet time together and it should help with the 4pm monster stage. My 2.5yro has quiet time that he sits and draws in while watching a movie when my 1yro naps after lunch. Sam

Give her a bath at the 3-4 witching hour to refresh her.
