There is so much talk about breastfeeding and its benefits, and there is just as much said against it. It’s easy to become confused and not know what’s true and what’s not.
Here are 5 breastfeeding myths exposed:
Bigger boobs produce more milk
Nope, not necessarily. The size of your breasts has nothing at all to do with how much milk you produce, nor how much the baby will receive. Small boobs can provide adequate milk for your bubs and have even been known to produce excess!
Breastfeeding makes your boobs sag
As much as it would be nice to blame something; sadly, aging and gravity are the culprits. Women who have never breastfed eventually acquire saggy breasts, too.
You should wash your nipples before each feed
What on earth are you doing with your nipples between feeds? Your breasts, generally, aren’t exposed to too many toxins, or bacteria or germy things, so there’s really no need. Breast milk also contains antibacterial agents that help protect the baby. Just make sure your nipples are dry and don’t panic about anything else.
Breastfeeding can be used as contraception
Whilst breastfeeding can delay menstruation and ovulation, preventing pregnancy, there are a number of factors that need to be considered, like exclusive, regular breastfeeding. We wouldn’t recommend you use it as the only method of contraception.
If you’re angry or upset, you’ll sour your milk
And if you’re a cyborg, you’ll never get angry or upset! Stress may impact the flow of milk when feeding your baby, but you are only human and you do experience a range of emotions, none of which will sour or spoil your breast milk.
There you have it! Hopefully you’re a little clearer now and there are many more where these came from. Have you heard any good / ridiculous ideas about breastfeeding?
