If you are looking for a family day out, then we have found 10 places to go with kids in the Blue Mountains. Some awesome family friendly activities that are worth a day trip with the tribe.
Memorial Park in Blackheath
Memorial Park is a fabulous spot for a picnic and a play in the park. Boasting an iconic rocket ship climbing tower and mega slide, that’s just the tip of the ice berg for what this awesome playground has to offer.
There is:
- A duck pond
- Three separate playgrounds
- Swings
- Small park with climbing apparatus, swinging bridge and small slide
- Historic park with metal framed play equipment, airplane, shoe house, car and train carriage
- Third park with monkey bars, flying fox, curly slide and bridges
- Picnic tables
- Plenty of grass and space for a picnic
Gingerbread House Cafe in Katoomba
The Gingerbread House Cafe is a treat for the kids. Outdoors it has a play area including a cubby house, noughts and crosses game and small play equipment. Inside, this cafe looks like a real life gingerbread house.
There is a candy store and ice cream bar in the centre of the cafe. There’s also Christmas festivities in July and at Christmas time. They also have a Free Book Library where kids can either borrow the books to read over lunch or bring a book and swap for a book they love in the library.
Wascoe Siding in Blaxland
Once a month on the first Sunday of the month, Wascoe Siding‘s miniature trains are running for rides! Take the kids for a day out where you can take advantage of the on site barbeque facilities or grab a bite to eat from the canteen. There are also picnic tables for the early arrivers.
Wascoe Siding has several trains that run including steam trains, diesel trains and electric trains. Tickets are $3.50 per ride so grab a lot and let the kids go nuts riding the trains to their heart’s content. But be sure to wear close toed shoes! Open toed shoes can’t be worn on the trains for safety reasons.
Leura village
Wander through the picturesque Leura village with the family. There is a gorgeous toy store the kids will love, and lots of nice cafes along the way to find a bite to eat. But check out Leura Gourmet – a delicious deli cafe with views of the Megalong Valley. You’ll also find a little park at the foot of the village, a delicious pie bakery and three stops for the family with a sweet tooth – a candy store, and two chocolate shops.
Three Sisters lookout and Scenic World in Katoomba
There is lots to do at Scenic World including a ride on the Scenic Skyway which is suspended 270m above the forest canopy below. You can take in spectacular views of the Three Sisters, the Jamison Valley and Katoomba Falls from above.
Or if you want to venture downwards take the kids on the Scenic Railway which travels 310m down through a cliff tunnel into the ancient rainforest of the Jamison Valley. During April and May Sculpture at Scenic World takes place, showcasing sculptures and artworks on the scenic walkway. If you just wanted to check out the Three Sisters, you can go to the free lookout on Echo Point Road and also enjoy a short 2km walk down to the Three Sisters themselves.
2773 in Glenbrook
This is one of our all time favourite cafes and makes our list of places to visit with kids in the Blue Mountains. 2773 is very family friendly with a cubby house and play area outdoors for the kids and a farm area with pigs and chickens. There is a great kids menu and on weekend enjoy live music.
Plus there is an ice cream cart and a pizza oven for woodfire pizzas outside.
Leura Cascades bush walk
This lovely scenic bush walk is a great one to take the kids on. There is a picnic area with play equipment and toilets before you start the walking track. You can do a circuit which takes you on a full loop. The Leura Cascades are a lovely little waterfall with a viewing platform at the bottom. Then if you continue on the trail you will come to Majestic Lookout, which has spectacular views of Mount Solitary.
Pirate Ship park in Wentworth Falls
Another fabulous playground, the Pirate Ship park got its name because of the pirate ship play equipment parked right on the lakes edge. Let the kids play out their pirate adventures and then throw some bread to the ducks just outside the boat after.
There is also a scooter path leading to a second playground with swings, flying fox and multi-level climbing areas.
Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge
The Norman Lindsay Gallery is the home of the Magic Pudding. You’ll even find him in the gardens tucked away along with other artworks by writer and artist Norman Lindsay. The grounds are lovely to stroll around with a fountain in the centre.
The gallery is lovely to wander through also and there is a cafe on site to grab a bite to eat. In November, the Etsy Handmade Markets are held at the Norman Lindsay Gallery.
The Lolly Bug sweet shop in Little Hartley
If you love sweets from all over the world, then you’ll love visiting The Lolly Bug sweet shop. On the highway in Little Hartley, you can’t miss the Lolly Bug as it has two bright yellow Volkswagon Bugs outside of it painted in lollies.
Everything from Reese’s Pieces to weird and wonderful flavoured M&Ms, and even Malteser flavoured chocolate spread in a jar is available in this amazing lolly and gift shop. Stop in and treat the tribe!
