I was at a friend’s house in January and we were chatting about how to store all of those precious and copious school memories. She had a copy of a My School Days file and it prompted me to investigate further. My oldest daughter started kindergarten last year and a whirlwind year later, full of wonderful memories and new friends we were happy to find a way to keep some of the memories together that will last us through her schooling life.
What does My School Days have to offer:
Each year of school life has a series of interview style questions, a place to paste school photos, a place for height, year, school and your address. Each page has a pocket to keep some of your precious memories, like awards, ribbons.
A quick interview: My daughter, husband and I sat down and went through the interview questions. It only took 10 minutes. Some questions weren’t suitable for our family however it mostly teased out a great variety of information that reflected the year she has had. Unfortunately, there is one page for prep/kindergarten and then it moves on to year one. In Perth children attend kindergarten, then pre-primary before starting year 1, so we will need to squeeze them in together in the book. I can imagine my girls looking back through these books in years to come and laughing at the responses they have given; ‘Things I don’t like about school: boys pulling my hair.’
Some of the interview questions include a list of your favourite things (such as books, movies, food, songs), what I want to be when I grow up, favourite family trips and what I like most about school.
The book also comes with a page for memories for before school days, however I used the A Book About Me (also from Milestone press) for their first 5 years and have for all three. A Book About Me is a comprehensive Australian journal for all of your child’s firsts and has blank pages to add colourings/foot prints etc.
Between the My School Days book of memories and a folder for all of her craft, we can keep the precious memories of her school years together. I will be getting 2 more My School Days books so that all three girls can have their schooling memories for years to come.
I’m sure our whole family will enjoy looking back at the memories and replies to our children’s interviews. It will be fun to see how their thought, dreams and language change through the years as they grow and develop through their school years.
