Modern cloth nappies are here to stay! Lots of Aussie mums have embraced them for their many benefits however you might still be feeling a little unsure. Kate from Bouncing Bubs shares her expert knowledge with this beginners guide to modern cloth nappies.

Thinking about modern cloth nappies? Or MCN as their big fans might term them! Here’s everything you need to know about getting on board the cloth nappy train…

Mention the words “modern cloth nappy” and most people will say “oh, really”, give you the look of confusion and almost instantaneously say “how do they work”?  The world of MCNs can be daunting and confusing, especially for 1st-time Mums, however, after a few more questions and education most people become instant converts!

This guide to modern cloth nappies is your first step in realising just how amazing this product can be…

What exactly is a modern cloth nappy?

Modern cloth nappies are shaped, fitted, washable, reusable nappies made out of fabric that can be re-used rather than disposed of. The modern cloth nappy is typically made from modern textiles such as hemp and bamboo, both of which are more absorbent than regular cotton.

Modern cloth nappies are shaped just like a disposable nappy to fit around your baby’s thighs and belly preventing leaks. Most MCNS fasten using press studs or Velcro. So now you know what they are – let’s get to the nitty gritty…

Modern cloth nappies are easy to clean

When I started using MCNs I was amazed at how easy they were to use, no soaking, no scrubbing, all that needs doing is a pre-wash before use.  Most nappies can also be tumble dried which makes things even easier but the best way to make those stains miraculously disappear is drying in direct sunlight.  Check out our guide to cloth nappies and poo.

Many people fear modern cloth nappies will be more gross than normal nappies but the fact is that whatever your baby poops is what you’re dealing with – no matter the style of nappy you choose!

Cloth nappies are free from nasty chemicals

The thing that attracts most people to MCNs is knowing they are free from nasty chemicals, which, makes them better on little one’s skin and that they are helping the environment.

Many mums are concerned about the bleach, gels and chemicals used in disposable nappies and view that MCNs are a way to stop baby getting into contact with these substances.

Cloth nappies can also vary on price, you can get “Internet Cheapies”, some of which are not as high quality as better makes and could cause leaks.  Good quality MCNs provide comfortable, leak-proof protection against the most volatile of ‘accidents’.  The popular popper system makes them quick and easy to put on, very much like a disposable and allows the nappy to grow with your baby, making them more economical.

Modern cloth nappies last for years

I would certainly recommend anyone to try cloth nappies, they are no longer bulky looking like they were years ago, and once you have your nappy stash built up you do not need to spend any further money, unlike disposable nappies.  Reusable nappies can last from birth to potty training which also means for more than one child.

Modern cloth nappies are good for the environment

It is widely believed that when you consider the environmental impact of manufacturing and laundering, modern cloth nappies (that are dry-pailed and mostly line-dried) are still a better choice for the environment than disposables. There’s no chemicals and no landfill with modern cloth nappies.

Modern cloth nappies look adorable

My most favourite thing about them is how they look in comparison to their paper rivals, they are adorable and funky but a very close second is the cost-saving and never having the panic of running out of nappies!  I just love them and dare you to give them a go!
