We all like free money, right? Love the idea of your Christmas shopping costs being taken care of just by doing your regular grocery shop? Well read on for some money-making handy hints. All you need is a little bit of planning and your trusty Flybuys card.

Think points programs are a waste of time? Well think again! I’m going to give you the step-by-step breakdown on how to make at least $700 a year using Flybuys.

Here’s how to get the most out of your flybuys points – let’s do it!

Start with the Flybuys App.

First of all, you’re going to need to download the Flybuys app and create an account in your name. To maximise the money you make, open a second account in your partner’s name. Your partner can download the app on their phone, or you can use a cloning app to get the second Flybuys account on your phone. If you don’t have a partner, it can be anyone over the age of 16. When you open your account, make your partner the secondary cardholder. When you open your partner’s account, make yourself the secondary cardholder.

But how do I make real money from Flybuys points?

It takes 2000 points to earn $10, and baseline points values are $1 spent = 1 point. I can hear you thinking ‘I have to spend two grand to make $10??? No way is that worthwhile!’ If you were just collecting baseline points, this would be true, but we’re going to be getting onto bonus points deals, this is where the money is.

Now here’s the hot tip: Flybuys run promotions through their app where they do 10,000 point offers on 4 week spends. There is on average, 7 of these 10,000 point 4 week spend offers a year (based on the offers sent out the last few years). Each 10,000 point offer is worth $50. That right there equals $350 alone. Have 2 accounts (yours and your partner’s) and you can easily double this to $700, provided you play it smart.

Some basic rules for how to get the most out of your Flybuys points

One thing you want to avoid when collecting points is inadvertently increasing your spending for the sake of points. Have a budget and stick to it.

Flybuys base their 4 week spend offers off the amount you spend, so the less you spend, the less you will have to spend to earn the $50 in bonus points. This is where the second account comes in handy. Let’s just say you have a $150 bonus point offer, and one of your grocery shops comes to $200. If you spend $200 and swipe your Flybuys card, your next offer will likely be for a $200 spend as Flybuys pushes your spend offer up to encourage you to spend more.

Here’s how we use the second card to get around that. When your shopping reaches $150, swipe your main card and pay for that amount. Put the rest of the groceries through as a separate transaction and swipe your other card. You get the points without driving your spend amount up and it hardly takes any extra time.

Here’s the other hot tip, keep your spend amounts on your second account to $50 or less. Use it for small top-up shops or as described above to keep your offers on that account as low as possible. That way, your 4 week spend offers on your second card stay at a low dollar value. The lowest spend amount offered for bonus point deals is usually $50. This way you can stick within budget and earn bonus points on both accounts, cleaning up a cool $100 in points with each 4 week spend.

Sounds Great! What else does Flybuys offer?

Flybuys doesn’t just offer bonus points on the 4 week spend, they do single spend offers as well. These usually vary from 2000 points up to 10,000 points per single spend, but these are randomly generated and there’s no way of knowing what offers will come your way. These single-spend offers are a great opportunity to stockpile non-perishables if the offer is a good one.

Individual item bonuses

Another way to get bonus points is on specific individual items. Flybuys will offer a set amount of bonus points, for example 200 bonus points, to buy a particular brand of a product. This is great if you already buy this product or were planning to try it. If it is more expensive than your usual brand though, do not buy these items just for points as this can cost you more in the long run. I activate all offers, but don’t buy anything I wouldn’t ordinarily buy. If you start spending money just for points, that’s when you start losing out, which is why it’s important to stick to your usual budget.

So what if I had a big spend on my secondary account and the spend amount is too high?

It is possible to get your spend amount back down, but it will probably take a few months. If your spend amount is too high, activate your offers, but don’t use them. Make sure any amounts spent on that card are only small amounts, and use mostly the other card for a while. Over time, your spend offers will drop.

*One disclaimer; loyalty programs like Flybuys are random and what offers one person receives another person may not. Generally speaking; the 4 week spends happen at consistent times and are available to most people. If you’re not receiving any offers, you can contact Flybuys to make sure your settings are activated correctly.
